Rafting is readily accessible from La Ceiba, and even from Roatan. The best place to stay in and enjoy this activity is the Cangrejal River Valley. There are four different rafting outfitters that offer their services in the Cangrejal River. This is the only river in Honduras where you can practice white water rafting in Honduras throughout the year.
The river has two different sections that you can raft. The regular section is from the village of El Naranjo, which is 10 km, or 6 miles from La Ceiba. The takeout is just below Jungle School, about 3 km from La Ceiba. This section offers some exiting class III and IV rapids. A succession of small drops and pools provide the perfect combination for a fun time. One of the most outstanding aspects of rafting in this river is the water temperature. Despite that fact that the water is born high up in the mountains, its temperature is pleasant.
The crystal clear waters, the exiting rapids, and the lush tropical rain forest on the river banks provide an ideal setting. If you have done white water rafting before, you will marvel at the challenging and technical rapids. If this is your first time, you will have the time of your life and want to experience more.
The tour is a half day tour. The service includes professional bilingual guides and your own paddle, helmet and life vest. Your guide will provide you with instructions, and an in depth safety talk. You will have time to practice the commands learned before setting off on your adventure experience.
The second section you can raft is more technical and demanding. Before you can run that section, you must run the regular section to make sure you are able enough for this adventure. This “upper section” will take you from the village of El Pital to the village of Las Mangas.
You will find that white water rafting in the Cangrejal River will be one of the highlights of your trip. If you are staying at La Villa de Soledad, you are a short 10 minute walk from the regular put-in of the lower section of the Cangrejal River.
